Brett Favre Considering Making a Comeback

Brett Favre, to some the greatest quarterback in recent memory, is considering coming out of retirement for one more season. Favre has communicated his potential desire to coach Mike McCarthy but talks have not advanced to a substantive stage, a Packers source said. On ESPN's NFL Live, Packers defensive back Al Harris said on Wednesday: "I've talked to Brett and I know he has the itch to come back and play. If he will or not, I don't know. But I know he's feeling he wants to play." When asked how Favre expressed his desire to return, Harris said the quarterback said, "I got the itch." Favre has always been one to defy the odds, and comeback with a huge season. Lets see what happens as the all time great, attempts to possibly make a comeback.

Penguins Compensate Losses with Resigning of Orpik and Malkin

Soon after losing Marian Hossa and Ty Conklin to the Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings, the Pittsburgh Penguins have signed Brooks Orpik to a six-year $22.5 million contract. The 27-year old from San Francisco, California scored one goal and ten assists in 78 regular season games for the Penguins last season; he also had two assists in 20 playoff games. Although it does not seem like much, it is important to note that Orpik did lead the league in hits (102) and blocked shots (61) during the postseason. According to Ray Shero, Penguins GM, "Brooks has become a mainstay of our blue line and played an important role in our run to the Stanley Cup Final. He provides the kind of physical presence you need on a Cup contender, and his work ethic, preparation and determination are second to none."

In addition to signing Orpik, the Penguins have inked superstar Evgeni Malkin to a five-year extension. The 21-year old from Magnitogorsk, Russia finished 2nd in scoring (47 goals + 59 assists = 106 points) in the regular season behind, of course, Alexander Ovechkin. Malkin tallied 10 goals and 12 assists in the playoffs to boot.

Michael Beasley's First Practice Ended With Injury

Michael Beasley's first practice as a member of the Miami Heat had to end because he elbow he took to the chest form an unidentified teammate. Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra claims the measure was completely precautionary, and said that if this was during the regular season Beasley would have come back if needed. Spoelstra says the injury will not affect Beasley's five games in five days run by the Orlando summer league.

Brain Campbell Goes To New Team

One of the top Defensive players in free agency, Brain Campbell, has signed with the Chicago Blackhawks for eight years. the deal is worth about $7.14 million dollars annually. this comes shortly after the Blackhawks signed Cristobal Huet for a four year deal worth about $5.62 million dollars annually.

This free-agency period, the Blackhawks were looking to upgrade their defense, which was slumping last season. They finished just three points shy of the postseason last year and are now looking forward to making a run at winning it all this season, now that they have the resources available to them.

Sean Avery Now a Star: a Dallas Star

New York Rangers LW Sean Avery has just signed a four-year $15.5 million contract with the Dallas Stars. The 28-year-old from Pickering, Ontario, Canada is considered to be an NHL enforcer and one of the most hated players in the NHL. In 57 regular season games with the Rangers last season, Sean Avery scored 15 goals and 18 assists. In the eight playoff games he played in, he scored four goals and three assists.

Sean Avery is perhaps most famous (or infamous) for his interactions with New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur (winner of this year's Vezina trophy). On April 13, 2008, while the Rangers had a two-man advantage, Sean Avery proceeded to distract Brodeur by waving his stick and hands in front of the crease. Such behavior was technically legal at the time, but it was deemed unsportsmanlike. Following the game, the NHL issued an ex post facto rule that clarified such actions as unsportsmanlike.

Following the conclusion of the Rangers/Devils series, Martin Brodeur refused to shake Avery's hand. Consequently, Avery would call Brodeur a "fatso" for such an act of bad sportsmanship.

Conklin AND Hossa from Eastern Champs to Stanley Cup Champs

BIG NEWS in the world of hockey today as Pittsburgh Penguins RW Marian Hossa has just signed a one-year $7.4 million contract with the Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings; this $7.4 million is the most money that Detroit would pay anyone, even an unrestricted free agent. Hossa, as well as Pascal Dupuis, was traded to the Penguins from the Thrashers earlier this year in exchange for Colby Armstrong, Angelo Esposito, and Erik Christensen.

The 29-year old from Stara Lubovna, Slovakia scored 29 goals and 37 assists with the Thrashers and Penguins in 72 regular season games as well as 12 goals and 14 assists in the playoffs.

Hossa will be joining his Penguins teammate Ty Conklin (Conklin was a backup goalie to Marc-Andre Fleury) in Detroit next season. Conklin signed a 1-year $750,000 contract with Detroit.

A-Rod skipping Home Run Derby

Alex Rodriguez will not participate in the 2008 Home Run Derby this year. He says it is because the Home Run Derby can have a bad affect on your batting mechanics. After winning the Home Run Derby when he was with the Phillies, teammate Bobby Abreu slumped through the second half of that season, and understands A-Rod's decision. “I know it’s a show, but we want him for the rest of the season to be good and not to struggle to find his swing,” said Abreu. This year's Home Run Derby now will be missing two great sluggers, David Ortiz and A-Rod.

Redden to Wear Rangers Jersey for Next Six Years

Wade Redden, defenseman for the Ottawa Senators, has signed a six-year $39 million contract with the New York Rangers. The 31-year old from Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Canada played 80 regular season games for the Senators last year, scoring six goals and 32 assists; he also had one assist in the playoffs to boot.

In addition to Redden, the Rangers have signed Michal Rozsival to a four-year $20 million contract. The 29-year old defenseman from Vlasim, Czech Republic scored 13 goals and 25 assists in 80 regular season games for the Rangers last season, in the playoffs, he scored a goal and five assists.

Other notable free agents that have yet to sign with a team include Mats Sundin and Marian Hossa. Although not official yet, rumor has it that Jaromir Jagr will return to his old team, Pittsburgh Penguins, next season. More news to follow shortly.

Both NY Ballparks To Be Torn Down Piece By Piece

I know that most of you who aren't fans of New York Sports won't care, but I felt it was important to pass along to those who do. It has recently been stated by NY Law that both Shea Stadium and Yankee Stadium will not be imploded, but rather taken down piece by piece. To confirm other information, there will be NOTHING preserved from either park, with the exception of a few items (seats, plate, etc.) being auctioned off for charity. The demolition of Shea will occur during the Winter. The House That Ruth Built will be taken down during Spring 2009. This means it may be possible to see the process during Opening Day 2009, but nothing has been confirmed.

There had been plans to partially preserve both parks, but financing fell through as well as public support. If you have not been to either of these parks, no matter where you live, I suggest you come over to New York to check them out. If not, you will miss your last chance to view sports history.
